Tania Johnson finalist for CDA 2012

We are delighted that our newest client, Tania Johnson, has been selected as a finalist in the Carpet Design Awards 2012 at Domotex. Tania was nominated in the Best Studio Artist Design category for her rug, GLOW.

The international competition seeks to celebrate outstanding craftsmanship and innovation and to award designers whose creations have contributed to the current carper renaissance.

GLOW is as a unique rug, with an intricate and striking design.

Congratulations to Tania for the nomination!

We ♥ Gandia Blasco

It’s Valentines Day and if there’s one duo we love right now, it’s the Gandia Blasco and Stefan Diez collaboration…

In the past year, Stefan Diez has scooped two Red Dot awards and been nominated in the Designs of the Year Award 2012, to name just a few of his achievements. Now, the prestigious designer has teamed up with Valencia based Gandia Blasco to create a range of outdoor furniture entitled Tropez.

The collection takes inspiration from 1920s and 1930s sportswear fashion and is reminiscent of sailing boats, the riviera and lawn tennis. Each piece adheres to the 20s ethos of linear shapes and simple designs and in doing so maintains absolute elegance.

As well as beds, sofas, armchairs, stools and benches there are also modular sofas, pouffes, high and low-level tables and chaise longues. Marrying outdoor furniture design with the comfort of indoor seating, the range is multi-functional and flexible.

Gandia Blasco is available in the UK from Viaduct.

Refin @ Stockholm Furniture Fair

The Stockholm Furniture Fair, part of Stockholm Design Week,  is a hot date in the design calendar. The world’s largest event for Scandinavian design took place last week and was a huge success.

Homeware, lighting and new furniture were on display across the week including some of our favourite new designs by legendary French designer, Inga Sempe, for Swedish lighting brand Wästberg.

Amongst the many hundreds of exhibitors were Ceramiche Refin, who took their METAL range of ceramic tiles to the festival. The designs come in gold, platinum and copper and form intricate patterns that play with lighting and concept as well as material.

Featuring at Stockholm last week were some of the most forward thinking and innovative designers and the fair did not disappoint in demonstrating the effectiveness of simplicity.

Refin @ Surface Design Show 2012

Did you know….

that the human eye can identify over 10 million different colours? No, neither did we until Ceramiche Refin launched their latest collection, Cromie.

Refin have used NCS – Natural Colour System ®© (a chromatic system which helps identify all these colours) and have integrated it within their tile range to brilliant effect. At the Surface Design Show, Refin exhibited their innovative Cromie tile collection together with a selection of the 30 colours that they have newly developed.

The Surface Design Show is the only exhibition in the UK that specialises in surface design and is a must-see for all interior designers, architects and specifiers. With an unmissable stand, it was unsurprising to see them catch the eyes of so many visitors.

The 2012 show gave us a chance to see new designs and trends from Mix, Gray Concrete, Graphic Relief (and their collaboration with Timorous Beasties), Pyrolave, and Little Greene to name just a few.

Tania Johnson Design

We are excited to announce that we are now representing Tania Johnson Design.

Thonet’s Starring Role

Beginners

Mike Mills is a graphic designer and music video director. He is also the brains behind what has been one of this summer’s box office hits – Beginners. Starring Ewan McGregor, Melanie Laurent and Christopher Plummer, Beginners is a simple yet seductive film centred on old ties and new starts.

If we didn’t have such an eye for good design, we could quite easily have lost ourselves within the touching American tale. We should really make it clear here that our wandering eye was not due to any failure on the film’s part to keep our attention, indeed we were hooked from the beginning (excuse the pun!). Yet, nestled in the changing lives of these complex characters, was an all-important set. And making up this set was a collection of iconic Thonet bentwood chairs.

Mills is a graphic designer. His choice in visual effects is not accidental. The Thonet chairs are featured in McGregor’s home. They are surrounded by individual objects that induce an important sense of nostalgia. They’re part of a collection that suggests an accumulation of furniture that has been hand picked over time to form a family home. The Thonet chairs here have existed across decades, been sat on by children who have turned to adults and adults who have now become dependent.

Ultimately, Mill’s has employed these chairs in the best possible way. He’s used them to create a visually impactful film but also to denote a silent message – Thonet is the constant in change. Thonet bentwood chairs are the product of careful, classic design that stand the test of time and exist through generations from the beginning right until the very end.

Terraviva by Refin

Italian tile company Refin have just launched in the UK, and we have fallen for the Terraviva range in a big way. Designed by Massimiliano Adami, and made out from porcelain stoneware, these tiles have a series of cracks running through them.  Despite their random appearance, the cracks are made by hand and a variety of different designs can be created. Terraviva tiles can be used on walls and floors, and are available in a palette of colours.
